“Quo VALIS” is a 70+ page mixed media project that I created in a massive burst of manic energy in the first week of July. It consists of mostly collage built on top of the book “Twin Peaks: The Secret History.” My source materials were about 15 (!) boxes of ephemera & clipped-out pictures/quotes I had been hoarding. Included are vintage comics, antique (100+ years) books, food packaging, old clothes, printed-out tweets, etc…even panels from my own comic books.
(No copyright/credit is taken for any of the individual images or elements I’ve used in this piece.)
I made “Quo VALIS” because I was going through a particularly stressful & depressing time in my life. Originally, it was just supposed to be a scrapbook of “positive thinking” quotes & the like. But somewhere, as Bugs Bunny would say, it took a left turn at Albuquerque. Now it’s…kind of like a “grimoire.”
My biggest influences in making this project are all the wonderful women on YouTube who are brave enough to share their own “art journals,” and William Burroughs’ “cut-up” technique of scrapbooking/divination. This book is dedicated to them all.
Here are the 1st 10 pages of “Quo VALIS,” with the rest to come. If you would like specific notes on each page, please follow my #QuoVALIS thread on Twitter.
