Donald Glover’s Deadpool Cartoon Is No More

Well, if you were looking forward to that no-doubt edgy Deadpool animated series that FX has green-lit from Donald Glover last year…you know, tough-titty and all that. Apparently ain’t gonna happen.

Per FX:

“Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series…FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”

Wot happen??? Why would FX, on the “eve” of the release of Deadpool 2, right when Glover’s career—with not only the critical/commercial hit Atlanta but a damn STAR WARS movie coming out—is seemingly at its zenith, axe this series?

My personal take? While many will point to the pending Disney acquisition of Fox as a HUGE factor here…I think they just want to make Deadpool a “Marvel Studios-fied” property. I think that’s why they did reshoots for Deadpool 2 with added Cable/X-Force in it; to make it a “sure thing” property/franchise in the mold of the Marvel/Disney stuff.

Glover is a cutting-edge talent who probably had some big plans for this cartoon…but it might not have fallen in line with this new vision of Deadpool…this new vision of Deadpool which is probably a new vision of the entire X-Men franchise. Hence the “creative differences” part of that FX statement (key to remember here: Legion itself is also an X-Men property).

Perhaps Glover should look into taking over his old Community showrunner’s cartoon.
