Rumors swirled a couple of days ago of a poorly-received test-screening of Deadpool 2, with at least one Twitter user allegedly getting a threatening letter from Fox to take down their negative review (I can’t find the Reddit thread anymore that originally had this, so here is a link to a Twitter search with results mentioning the negative test-screening buzz) .
Now Josh Brolin confirms that he’s been sent back to do reshoots for the film…8 weeks before the movie’s release.
Brolin dropped the news during an interview with EW concerning his other big movie debuting soon with Marvel characters, Avengers: Infinity War:
EW: You’re playing Cable in Deadpool 2, as well. It’s an interesting coincidence that you’re playing these two Marvel Comics characters. Deadpool is so self-referential, I wondered if they ended up slipping any Thanos jokes into your dialogue.
Brolin: I can’t imagine there’s not going to be any. [Laughs] I’ll put it that way. I’m up here right now in snowy Vancouver doing reshoots for Deadpool. Given that it’s a satire of all superhero movies, especially Marvel movies, how can you not?
How can you possibly mess Deadpool 2 up? You gave the audience what they wanted in the first Deadpool…add Josh Brolin plus fan favorite characters in Cable & Domino…rinse and repeat. How hard is this?
Or has the market/zeitgeist for this type of self-referential fanboy flick had its day? OR: rightly or wrongly, does the studio believe this, has suddenly gotten cold feet, and is scrambling to make this a superhero movie that might be more palatable to what they now perceive to be desired audience?
Consider: over the last week, we’ve received news that the actress who plays Domino, Zazie Beetz, has just received a 3-picture deal with Fox. So…they seem to be fine with her. It’s apparently the rest of the movie they are freaking the fuck out about.
At any rate…nervous studios who mess around with superhero movies at the last minute produce flicks like Green Lantern (also starring Ryan Reynolds).
Some movies just come out at the wrong time.
