I’m not sure if the bigger news here is that Matt Smith, most recently from the BBC series The Crown, and the 11th Doctor Who, is to play cult leader Charles Manson in an upcoming film by American Psycho director Mary Harron—or that American Psycho director Mary Harron is making a movie about Charles Manson.
To repeat—the director of the 2000 movie American Psycho is making a movie about Charlie Manson. How does the untitled Tarantino production get so much buzz, but this is the first time I’m hearing about the Harron production? From Patrick Bateman to Charles Manson—it’s perfect!
I’m not going to lie, the choice of Smith as Manson is a little off-beat…he’s a tall thin kinda whimsical guy…but I can see it. He can get intense if he needs to.
The film, Charlie Says, focuses on the three “Manson Women” who were sentenced to death after the murder of Sharon Tate. It’s based on the classic book on the case by Ed Sanders, The Family; Harron’s writer from American Psycho, Guinevere Turner, will return to script.
And there you have it. It’s a great time to be…a fan of Charles Manson. I guess.
