Well MY mind is blown. Holy crap on a cracker.
Deadline reports that an origin movie featuring Batman villain The Joker is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. The Hangover’s Todd Phillips and 8 Mile’s Scott Silver would co-write, Phillips would direct, and Phillips and MARTIN SCORSESE would produce.
Keeping with the Scorsese-esque theme, the film is described in the Deadline piece as:
“a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”
When you think of such memorable Scorcese characters as Travis Bickle…get a young new Robert De Niro on this movie, stat.
The untitled Joker project will be the first of a new as-of-yet-unnamed banner at Warner Bros that will “expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.”
It is unlikely, given the unique direction of the film, that the Heath Ledger version of the character (the version itself, not the late Ledger, of course) will be featured, nor the garish Jared Leto Suicide Squad one. What direction will they go towards instead in their search for this new Joker?
