A TV series based on the animated series The Jetsons has just received a pilot order from ABC. Robert Zemeckis will executive produce, along with Family Guy and Will & Grace writer/executive producer Gary Janetti.
Gosh, what can I say about the original Jetsons? The quick-and-dirty definition is that they were literally created as a “futuristic” counterpart to the successful Flintstones animated series in the early 1960s. But they had their own unique enduring charm—certainly, George Jetson was quite different from Fred Flintstone, and if anything was more Jerry Smith from Rick & Morty than Homer Simpson (sorry, George fans!).
The original Hanna-Barbara cartoon The Jetsons ran from 1962-1963 on ABC (I know—feels like it was on longer, doesn’t it?), then had a revival in 1985 with 45 new episodes being produced (which, if anything, are more likely to be the rerun eps you remember). Then there was The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones TV movie in 1987, a Jetsons animated movie in 1990, and an improbable The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! in 2017.
There is also a Jetsons comic book series coming out from DC Comics, which, if it is anywhere near as good as their Flintstones series will probably be amazing. So: a good time for The Jetsons right now!
