First Female African-American Road Racer Dies In “Deadpool 2” Stunt

Stuntwoman Joi “SJ” Harris was killed on the set of Deadpool 2 Monday, jumping a curb and crashing into the Shaw Tower in Vancouver, British Columbia. Harris, the stunt Double for actress Zazie Beetz (who plays character Domino), was reportedly the first licensed female African-American road racer in the United States.

Filming has been temporarily halted, and an investigation by WorkSafeBC has been launched. Harris was witnessed performing the same stunt four times without a problem before the accident.

Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds, in a statement on Twitter, wrote that him and the production team “lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool. We’re heartbroken, shocked, and devastated.”

It has been a particularly bad time for movie stunts, as Tom Cruise recently suffered undisclosed injuries while shooting a scene for Mission Impossible 6.

Considered a trailblazing pioneer in her field, Harris said in a 2015 interview with Black Girls Ride Magazine that “Sisters on the track are few and far in between. I want to show them that there’s more for them to be exposed to. I want to get kids interested through experience.”
