The Karate Kid Story Continues, With A Twist, In “Cobra Kai”

Did you ever wonder what happened to William Zabka’s character after the second Karate Kid movie? Thanks to the ever-growing genre of fan-fiction classic TV & movie sequels, this question will soon be answered.

Cobra Kai, named after the dojo Zabka’s character Johnny Lawrence belonged to, will be a 10-episode series running on YouTube Red—with Ralph Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso. It traces the lives of these two rivals thirty years after the events of the original films, with the roles somewhat reversed. Danny is now the success, with Johnny being the down-and-out underdog.

Having the 80’s jock now strangely become the (anti?)hero is quite interesting, and something I predicted in my post “Geeks Will NOT Inherit the Earth: How Hollywood Helped the Jocks Win.”

Described as “a fresh, new comedic twist on one of Hollywood’s most storied rivalries,” Cobra Kai is being executive produced by Josh Heald (who wrote Hot Tub Time Machine), and Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg (the creators of the Harold and Kumar film franchise). It is set to debut on YouTube Red in 2018.
