I am huge unashamed fan of Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., so this possible “news” is very exciting…but let’s not collapse into a pile of ecstatic reaction gifs just yet.
According to U.N.C.L.E. co-star Armie Hammer in an interview with /Film, the sequel is currently being written right now:
I called Lionel Wigram, the producer of the movie, and he and Guy produced it and wrote it all together. I was like, ‘Dude, what’s the deal? I get asked about this shit all the time. Can you just write a sequel?’ He was like, ‘You know what? Yeah, fuck it, I’ll do it. Sure, I’ll write a sequel.’ I was like, ‘If you write one, I’m sure we can get one made,’ so who knows? Today is the first day I’ve actually told anyone that story. I only told one other person who asked. Apparently, the sequel is being written right now. No pressure, Lionel!
This isn’t the same as a solid confirmation that a sequel is being made…but it’s certainly encouraging. I found The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to be a really fun, fresh-faced and cool movie when it first came out in 2015; a real antidote to more gritty “realist” fare. It was also a real discovery for me in terms of Henry Cavill’s range and talent, as I only previously knew him from the sometimes-maligned Man Of Steel.
But the box-office for the film was “meh,” so I didn’t hold my hopes up for a sequel. Now Hammer’s words have given me some extra hope. Not to mention, U.N.C.L.E. has developed quite a devoted fan following since then. And the whole “Cold War” angle? Maybe just a little more apropos.
